On Thursday, 07/17/25 at approximately 9:17 PM, Troopers assigned to an active highway construction project (HCP) pattern on Route 9 northbound near exit 34 in Berlin were advised by the on-site CT DOT supervisor that he was rear-ended by another vehicle within the pattern. The left lane of Route 9 northbound and the exit 34 off ramp were closed for this project, and a vehicle traveling north in the right lane had veered left inside the construction pattern and collided with the rear end of a parked DOT vehicle which had actively displayed emergency safety lighting.
The initial HCP Trooper advised of the incident responded to the scene, along with the second HCP Trooper who was stationed ahead of the accident scene. Troop H- Hartford was advised of the accident via radio, and Troop H patrol Troopers also responded to the scene. The DOT supervisor reported minor pain following the collision and was evaluated by EMS on scene. The DOT supervisor ultimately refused medical transport, and the other operator reported no injuries.
The operator who struck the DOT supervisor's vehicle was positively identified as Brian Ayers (DOB 06/05/79), of West Hartford. Ayers was exhibiting clear signs of impairment on scene, to include the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his person, an open alcoholic container within the vehicle, and that he was extremely unsteady on his feet. Ayers was subjected to Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, to which he subsequently failed. Ayers was arrested without incident and transported to Troop H, where he was processed on the following charges:
CGS 14-212d(b); Endangering Highway Workers
CGS 14-227aZ; Illegal Operation of a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs in a Construction Zone
CGS 14-236Z; Failure to Maintain Proper Lane in a Construction Zone
CGS 53a-63; Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree
Ayers was later released from custody on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at New Britain Superior Court on 07/31/25. Please see the attached criminal information summary.
