Holiday Safety & Traffic Travel Tips

 Holiday Travel & Traffic Safety

  • The holidays are one of the busiest travel periods of the year on Connecticut roadways.

  • Increased traffic means a higher risk of crashes, especially during peak travel times.

  • Plan ahead, allow extra time, and expect delays during holiday weekends.

 Drive Smart, Drive Safe

  • Slow down and obey posted speed limits.

  • Maintain a safe following distance: Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the one ahead to allow for longer stopping times, especially in winter or heavy traffic conditions.

  • Buckle up—seat belts save lives, every seat, every trip.

  • Stay alert and focused; put the phone down and avoid distractions.

  • Watch for pedestrians and increased foot traffic in shopping and downtown areas.

 Impaired & Reckless Driving

  • Never drive impaired—alcohol, drugs, and prescription medications can affect driving.

  • Connecticut State Police will have increased patrols and DUI enforcement throughout the holiday period.

  • Reckless driving puts lives at risk and will not be tolerated. If you suspect a driver is impaired, safely gather identifying details about the vehicle and your location, and report it immediately by calling 911.

 Winter & Vehicle Preparedness

  • Check your vehicle before traveling: tires, lights, brakes, and windshield wipers.

  • Clear snow and ice from your vehicle: Remove all accumulated snow and ice from windows, mirrors, headlights, roof, hood, and trunk to maintain visibility and prevent hazards for other drivers.

  • Keep your gas tank at least half full and carry an emergency kit.

  • Be prepared for changing weather and road conditions.

 Timing Your Travel

  • Travel during off-peak hours when possible.

  • Monitor traffic updates and weather forecasts before heading out.

  • Share your travel plans with someone and check in when you arrive safely.

Shared Responsibility

  • Safe holiday travel is a shared responsibility between drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

  • Look out for one another and make choices that keep everyone safe.

The Connecticut State Police are committed to keeping our communities safe this holiday season.

Our goal is simple: everyone gets where they’re going safely and returns home to loved ones.
