The Connecticut State Police reminds all drivers to comply with the Move Over law, which requires motor vehicle operators to move over when approaching stationary first responder or passenger vehicles on the road.
“Too often, we have seen tragedies occur when drivers fail to slow down and move over a lane to keep these vehicles and their occupants safe,” noted Colonel Daniel Loughman, Commanding Officer of the Connecticut State Police.
“Troopers are committed to rigorously enforcing Move Over. Raising awareness of this vital law at a hectic time of year is essential for protecting not only our Troopers but also all motorists and emergency responders on the road,” Colonel Loughman said.
He added, “Through ongoing enforcement and community education, we hope to instill a greater understanding of the importance of this law, fostering a safer highway environment for everyone.”
Drivers in all 50 states are required to “move over” one lane to accommodate first responders or disabled vehicles that may be in a breakdown lane. The law is designed to protect those working on the roadside and those whose vehicles may have been involved in an accident or have broken down. First responders include troopers or police officers, firefighters, medical personal and tow truck operators.
