Tractor Trailer Crash in Barkhamsted Leads to Thousands in Fines for Vehicle Violations for Owner
On 09/11/2026, at approximately 6:47 p.m., Troop B – North Canaan was advised of a collision involving two tractor trailers in the area of Route 318 and Route 181, in Barkhamsted. No injuries were reported. The local fire department responded to assist with traffic control, and CT DOT was notified of a temporary road closure for the purposes of the investigation. The CSP Traffic Services Unit Truck Squad responded to assist.
Based upon the investigation that followed, Vehicle #1 was traveling with a trailer, eastbound on Route 318, in the town of Barkhamsted, approximately .2 miles east of its intersection with Route 181.
Vehicle #2 was traveling with an oversized load, westbound on Route 318. During the investigation, it was determined that Vehicle #2's trailer body crossed over the solid double yellow line on the roadway, causing it to collide with Vehicle #1's trailer in a sideswipe manner.
The owner of Vehicle #2 was issued an infraction for violating:
C.G.S. 14-270(i), Operating a vehicle under a forged permit
C.G.S.14-267a, Operating an overweight commercial vehicle-calculated using scale weight
C.G.S. 14-267a*, Operating an overweight commercial vehicle-calculated using axle weight (2 counts)
C.G.S. 14-262(d), Over-length or over-width load
C.G.S. 14-264*, Height of vehicle, excessive, without permit
C.G.S. 14-236, Failure to maintain lane
C.G.S. 14-96c, Failure to have tail lamps or to illuminate rear registration plates
The associated fines totaled $43,989.
