Troopers and Old Lyme Police Investigate Report of Gunshot Injury at Residence

On Saturday, April 1, 2023, at approximately 7:18 p.m., Old Lyme Police and Troopers assigned to Troop F in Westbrook responded to a reported gunshot injury at a residence on Portland Ave Ext. in Old Lyme. Upon arrival it was discovered that the accused, identified as Jordan Rehberg, DOB 10/11/1991, of Old Saybrook, was clearing his handgun at a dining room table with other adults seated nearby when it unintentionally discharged, injuring one of the adults at the table. The victim sustained injuries to both hands and was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital via ambulance for treatment. Investigators learned that two juveniles were allegedly nearby at the time of the incident.

As a result of information obtained during the on-scene investigation, the accused was placed under arrest and transported to Troop F, where he was processed and charged with the following:

C.G.S. 53-203, Illegal Discharge of a Firearm,

C.G.S. 53a-60, Assault in the 2nd Degree

C.G.S. 53-21, Risk of Injury to a Child (2 Counts),

C.G.S. 53a-64, Reckless Endangerment in the 2nd Degree

Rehberg was later released on a $10,000 cash bond and is scheduled for arraignment at New London Superior Court, on April 13, 2023.

General Firearm Safety Tips:

-Always keep firearms pointed in a safe direction.

-Treat all firearms as if they are loaded.

-Firearms which are not in use should be unloaded and stored in a locked, secure location.

-Keep your finger away from the trigger until you are aimed at your target and intend to shoot.

-Avoid distractions and stay a safe distance away from others when removing ammunition from or disassembling a firearm.

-Never carry a firearm if you plan to consume alcohol, cannabis, or other intoxicating substances. Keep yourself and other safe by leaving your firearm unloaded and locked in a secure location.
