On 08/05/2024, at approximately 11:11 a.m., Troopers from Troop D- Danielson responded to a report of suspicious activity at the I-395 northbound service plaza in Plainfield. A white male was observed tampering with an ATM and looking into parked cars. Upon arrival, Troopers saw a male fleeing across the highway to a black BMW sport utility vehicle with Pennsylvania plates in the southbound service plaza. The vehicle sped away on I-395 southbound. When Troopers attempted to stop the BMW, several items were thrown from the vehicle and later recovered, which included a backpack containing approximately $52,000 in $20 bills, a mobile hotspot, and an iPhone.
Troopers did not pursue the vehicle and it continued south on I-395 at a high rate of speed. Surveillance footage was reviewed from earlier in the day, and at approximately 7;15 a.m., the same BMW was seen driving by the plaza occupied by at least two individuals. Later, two white males, possibly the same individuals dressed differently, were seen entering the Northbound Exxon Mobile Gas Station store at different times. One suspect, wearing a black long-sleeve shirt and tan pants, used an electronic device to remove money from a Citibank ATM. His accomplice wore a white Nike short-sleeve shirt and tan pants. Both men had on white shoes, black caps, a tan waist bag, and sunglasses.
