Connecticut State Troopers Offer Tips for Staying Safe Following Accident or Vehicle Trouble

Your Connecticut State Troopers remind all drivers to stay safe on the roads and highways of our state, especially if you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident or experienced vehicle trouble.

As a rule, please adhere to the following tips to ensure safety for all:

  • In the event of an accident or vehicle breakdown, please move your vehicle as far as possible onto the right shoulder.

  • Initiate hazard lights to ensure your vehicle is visible to other drivers.

  • Call 911 so that first responders can be dispatched.

  • Stay inside your motor vehicle with your seatbelt fastened. This is the safest place for you and your passengers to remain while waiting for first responders to arrive.

  • If you are unable to stay in your vehicle due to fire, find a location away from both the burning vehicle and from the travel lanes.

  • The highway is not a place to repair your vehicle or fill the gas tank. Call 911 for help with your vehicle.
