Troopers Investigate Reports of Wrong Way Driver on I-84 in Tolland

On 05/25/2024, at approximately 4:26 a.m., Troop C dispatch received several 911 calls reporting a vehicle with its hazard lights illuminated, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-84 in the area of Exit 68 in Tolland.

As responding Troopers were traveling on I-84 eastbound in the area of Exit 67 and Exit 68, they observed a vehicle matching the description provided traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-84.  Shortly afterward, Troopers located the accused vehicle, a silver Honda Crosstour, parked on the the westbound rest area entrance ramp to I-84 westbound, in Willington.


During interactions with the vehicle’s operator, identified as Gilberto Rivera, DOB: 11/25/1983, of Hartford, Troopers observed Rivera to be exhibiting signs of impairment. Rivera was asked to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which were not performed to standard.


Based upon the information obtained during the investigation, Rivera was taken into custody and transported to Troop C, where he was processed and charged with the following violations:


C.G.S. 14-227a, Operating Under the Influence

C.G.S. 14-215, Operating Under Suspension

C.G.S. 14-237, Driving the Wrong Way on a Divided Highway

C.G.S. 53a-64, Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree


Rivera was released on a $25,000 cash/surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Rockville Superior Court, on 06/10/2024.

A vehicle traveling the wrong way on any road is a hazardous situation and an emergency. Please call 911 to report wrong way drivers as soon as it’s safe to do so.
