Troopers Investigate Evading Crash on RT 8, in Waterbury
On Thursday, 09/08/2022, at approximately 10:14 PM, Troop A - Southbury was advised of a motor vehicle accident on Route 8 northbound, south of Exit #36, in the City of Waterbury. One of the vehicles involved in the collision had allegedly evaded from the scene. A witness provided Troopers with a description of the evading vehicle and its last known location. A short time later, Troopers located a vehicle matching the description provided on Thomaston Avenue, in Waterbury. During the investigation, the accused operator of the evading vehicle at the time of the crash was identified as Michael Caiazzo (DOB: 03/25/1983), of Terryville, CT. Caiazzo was uncooperative during the investigation and was taken into State Police custody. Troopers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Caiazzo and observed other indicators of possible impairment. Caiazzo was transported to Troop A for arrest processing and declined to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.
As a result of this investigation, Caiazzo was charged with the following:
C.G.S. 14-224(b)(3), Evading a Motor Vehicle Accident
C.G.S. 14-227a, Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs
C.G.S. 14-236, Failure to Maintain Proper Lane of Travel
C.G.S. 53a-167a, Interfering with a Police Officer.
Caiazzo was unable to post a $1500.00 cash/surety bond and was transported to New Haven Correctional Center pending his arraignment at Waterbury Superior Court on 09/09/2022.
