Troopers Arrest Wrong-Way Driver on Merritt Parkway
On Thursday, 09/01/2022, at approximately 1:55 AM, Troop I- Bethany, received 911 calls reporting a vehicle traveling the wrong-way on Route 15 northbound, in the area of Exit 55, in Milford. Callers described the vehicle as traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. Troopers from both Troop G – Bridgeport and Troop I responded to Route 15 to locate the accused vehicle. Shortly after receiving the initial 911 calls, Troop G received a report of a motor vehicle accident on Route 15, in the area of the Milford/Orange line, involving a vehicle traveling northbound which had allegedly swerved to avoid a collision with the wrong-way driver, and in doing so struck a guardrail. The operator of the vehicle involved in the guardrail collision did not report injuries and the vehicle was later driven from the scene. The wrong-way vehicle, identified as a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, continued to travel southbound until Troopers from Troop G were able to stop the vehicle, in the left lane, south of the Sikorsky Bridge, in Stratford.
The operator of the Hyundai, identified as Carlos Ferreira (DOB 07/11/1963), of Fairfield, was found to have a suspended operator license and to be the subject of an active Paperless Re-Arrest Warrant (PRAWN). During this investigation, standardized field sobriety tests were administered, which Ferreira did not perform to standard. Additionally, Ferreira was found to be in possession of a substance, consistent in appearance with narcotics. Ferreira was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop I, where he was charged with the following:
Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs, C.G.S. 14-227a
Driving Wrong Way on a Divided Highway, C.G.S. 14-237
Operating a Motor Vehicle Under Suspension, C.G.S 14-215(a)*
Reckless Driving, C.G.S 14-222
Operating Without a License, C.G.S. 14-36
Possession of Control Substance, C.G.S. 21a-279.
Ferreira was held on a $2,500.00 bond relative to the charges above.
The PRAWN warrant for Ferreira was also served, charging him with C.G.S 53a-173, Failure to Appear 2nd Degree. Ferreira was held on a $500.00 bond set by the court, and was transported to New Haven Correctional Center, pending his scheduled court appearance on 09/01/2022, at Bridgeport Superior Court.
