Troopers Arrest Hartford Man Accused of Kidnapping in Springfield, Massachusetts
On Monday, 1/16/2023, at approximately 8:07 PM, Troop H in Hartford was contacted by the Springfield Police Department and advised of an active kidnapping which had been reported in Springfield, Massachusetts. Springfield Police provided a description of the suspect vehicle: a gold Chevy Malibu displaying a temporary license plate which was last known to be traveling southbound on Interstate 91 toward Connecticut.
Connecticut State Troopers were able to locate and intercept the described vehicle on I-91 southbound prior to Exit 36 and detain the operator. Investigating troopers determined that the vehicle’s passenger, an adult, was the victim who had initially reported the incident to Springfield Police. EMS responded to the scene to evaluate the passenger, who declined to be transported to a hospital.
Based upon information provided by Springfield Police and after consulting with the Hartford State’s Attorney’s Office, the operator of the vehicle, identified as Willie Avery Campbell (DOB 12/12/1997), of Hartford, Connecticut, was placed under arrest and transported to Troop H where he was processed and charged with the following:
C.G.S. 53a-61 Assault in the Third Degree
C.G.S. 53a-94 Kidnapping in the Second Degree
C.G.S. 53a-96 Unlawful Restraint in the Second Degree
C.G.S. 14-213b Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Minimum Insurance
C.G.S. 14-12(a)* Operating a Unregistered Motor Vehicle
C.G.S. 14-36(a) Operating without a License.
Campbell was held on a $100,000.00 bond and transported to Hartford Correctional Center pending arraignment on 1/17/2023 at Hartford Superior Court.
