Operator charged with DUI after causing accident on I-91 Wallingford that closed highway for hours
On Wednesday, 10/13/2021, at approximately 7:01 PM, Troop I – Bethany, was advised of a motor vehicle accident on I-91 northbound, in the area of Exit 13, in the Town of Wallingford. Investigation revealed that a flat-bed tractor trailer, operated by the accused, Dennis Goncalves Medeiros, DOB 06/15/1975, had been traveling on I-91 northbound, prior to Exit 13, when the tractor trailer began to swerve across all three (3) lanes on the roadway. The tractor trailer made initial contact with a metal guard rail located adjacent to the left median, which resulted in the tractor trailer losing a left rear tire. The tractor trailer then swerved across all three (3) lanes and struck the wire-rope guard rail located adjacent to the right shoulder of the roadway. As a result of these collisions, metal beams being transported on the flat-bed of the tractor trailer were released onto the roadway.
I-91 northbound was shut down for approximately two (2) hours, causing significant traffic delays, while the metal debris was cleared from the highway. Medeiros and his juvenile passenger reported no injuries. Investigating Troopers administered Standard Field Sobriety Tests, which Medeiros did not perform to standard. Medeiros was subsequently placed under arrest, transported to Troop I in Bethany, where he was processed without incident.
Medeiros was charged with the following violations:
C.G.S. 53-21 Risk of Injury to a Child
C.G.S. 53a-63 Reckless Endangerment in the 1st Degree
C.G.S. 14-227a Operating Under the Influence
C.G.S. 14-236 Failure to Maintain Lane
Medeiros was released on a $1,500.00 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear at, Meriden Superior Court, on 11/05/2021.
