On Friday, 03/28/25, at approximately 3:28 PM, a State Police Sergeant was traveling east on I-84 in the area of exits 64-65 in Vernon when the Sergeant observed a grey Volvo sport utility vehicle pass them in traffic on the right by means of the right lane at a rate of speed which was clearly higher than the flow of traffic.

The Sergeant transitioned to the left lane and began to accelerate in efforts to catch up to the observed vehicle. It was at this point that the grey Volvo was observed to still be in the right lane, passing other traffic at a high rate of speed. Simultaneously, two vehicles were observed stopped in the right shoulder with pedestrians standing outside, exposed to passing traffic. The Sergeant observed at this time that the operator of the Volvo abruptly changed lanes not prior to, but once it was upon these vehicles and pedestrians in the shoulder. Due to surrounding traffic, the Sergeant had briefly passed the Volvo from the left lane. Upon approaching exit 66, the Sergeant observed the Volvo once again passing from the right lane at a high rate of speed. The Volvo then cut across to the left lane and began to accelerate, at which point a speed clock was initiated. The Volvo was subsequently clocked for approximately one mile at speeds of up to 107 mph.

Prior to exit 67, the Volvo was forced to slow down with traffic ahead. The Volvo was then observed following too closely to the vehicle ahead of it in the left lane, being less than one car length at approximately 80 mph. Upon approaching exit 67, the vehicle ahead of the Volvo moved to the center lane, at which point the Volvo again began to accelerate. An additional speed clock was initiated, at which time the Volvo was observed to reach speeds up to 102 mph. Based upon the totality of these observations, the Sergeant activated their lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. The operator of the Volvo complied and came to a complete stop in the right shoulder east of exit 67 in Tolland.

The operator was positively identified as Abdullah Qureshi (DOB 12/14/99), of New York, NY. Upon asking Qureshi if he knew why he was stopped, Qureshi explained that he did not. Upon asking Qureshi if he was aware of how fast he was driving, Qureshi explained that he thought he was driving with the flow of traffic.

At approximately 1540 hours, Qureshi was asked to exit his vehicle and join the Sergeant in the shoulder. Qureshi complied, and once in a safe location he was advised that his speed constituted Reckless Driving and he was under arrest. Qureshi was secured in handcuffs without incident and was transported to Troop C- Tolland, where he was processed on the following charges:

CGS 14-222*; Reckless Driving- Greater than 85 mph

CGS 14-283b(c); Failure to Slow Down/Move Over for Non-Emergency Vehicle

CGS 14-236; Failure to Maintain Proper Lane- Limited Access Highway

CGS 14-240; Failure to Drive at a Reasonable Distance Apart

Qureshi was later released from custody on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Rockville Superior Court on 04/08/25. Please see the attached criminal information summary.
