Man Accused of Stealing Motor Vehicle Taken into Custody with Assistance of K-9 Rocco in Old Lyme

On 09/25/2024 at approximately 3:00 PM, Troop F in Westbrook was advised by the West Haven Police Department of a stolen motor vehicle, described as a black Jeep Grand Cherokee displaying a Connecticut registration, taken by an adult male and was last seen to be traveling in the Guilford area. Troop F dispatch personnel broadcasted a "Be On the Look Out" (BOLO) to patrol Troopers and provided them with the suspect's description. Shortly thereafter, Troop F was informed that Clinton Police Officers had located the Jeep traveling Northbound on I-95, but the operator of the Jeep eluded. Moments later, Old Saybrook Police Department advised Troop F that their Officers observed the Jeep merge onto I-95 Northbound from the exit 68 entrance ramp. Old Saybrook Officers were able to obtain a photo of the suspect from staff at a local gas station, who also told Police that the suspect was going around asking people for gas money, and provided Troop F with this photo. Troopers were unable to locate the Jeep during this time.

At approximately 7:33 PM, Troopers responded to the area of Lyme Street in Old Lyme for a reported active disturbance. The caller reported to dispatch that they were traveling on Lyme St when they stopped to assist an adult male who was lying on the ground near the exit 70 off-ramp to I-95 Southbound, and during their interaction, the adult male got up from the ground and unsuccessfully attempted to steal their vehicle before walking off towards a wood-line.

Once a Trooper arrived on scene, they met with the complainant who pointed towards the wood-line and told Troopers that the suspect ran into the woods. The Trooper approached the wood-line and could hear rustling within the woods. The Trooper gave the suspect verbal directives to stop running and to exit from the wooded area. The Trooper then retrieved their assigned canine partner, K-9 Rocco, from their cruiser for possible apprehension. In response, the suspect pleaded with the Trooper to not deploy their K-9, and eventually agreed to surrender. The Trooper continued to give the suspect verbal directives as he emerged from the wood-line, and ultimately placed him in handcuffs. The suspect was identified as Manuel Aviles, DOB 09/13/1988, of West Haven.

During the investigation, it was learned that the suspect involved in the disturbance, who had fled into the woods, was the same individual who had stolen the Jeep earlier in the day.

Aviles was transported to Troop F for processing where he was charged with the following violations:

C.G.S. 53a-119c, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle

C.G.S. 53a-167a, Interfering with an Officer

C.G.S. 53a-181, Breach of Peace 2nd Degree

During arrest processing, Aviles told Troopers that he abandoned the stolen Jeep on I-95 Southbound, just before exit 70.

After arrest processing, Aviles was held on a $50,000 cash/surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at New London Superior Court on 09/26/2024.

Troopers later located the unoccupied stolen Jeep on the I-95 Southbound prior to exit 70, with a flat tire.
