Killingworth Man Faces Multiple Charges after Striking Cruiser During Traffic Stop, Leads to Narcotics Seizure

On 09/13/2024 at approximately 01:28 AM, Troopers assigned to Troop H in Hartford responded to Route 2 in the area of exit 10 in Glastonbury for a vehicle stopped in the left lane of travel. Upon Troopers arrival to the scene, the vehicle, determined to be a silver Cadillac Deville, took off at a high rate of speed through an active construction pattern. Troop H personnel, along with Troop K personnel from Colchester, attempted to stop the Cadillac, but the operator eluded by continuing Eastbound on Route 2. Another Trooper responded to the area and posted at the area of exit 15 on Route 2 in an attempt to locate the Cadillac. A short time later, another Trooper observed the Cadillac traveling Eastbound on Route 2 and proceeded to follow the vehicle at a safe distance in order to coordinate an attempt to boxing in the vehicle with the assistance from other Troopers nearby. The Trooper followed the Cadillac onto Old Hartford Rd in Hebron when other Troopers turned on their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to box in the vehicle. While doing so, the operator of the Cadillac intentionally struck a cruiser to prevent being boxed in. The intentional collision caused by the operator of the Cadillac disabled both the cruiser and the Cadillac. As a result, the operator of the Cadillac fled on foot to evade arrest. The operator was apprehended by a Trooper and began actively fighting with them. Other Troopers arrived on scene and assisted with gaining control of the operator and placing him in handcuffs. The operator, identified by his Connecticut ID card as Zachary Whitehead, DOB 09/22/1989, of Killingworth, was ultimately taken into State Police custody.

A search incident to arrest was conducted on Whitehead and Troopers located drug paraphernalia and narcotics on his person. Additionally, Troopers observed several narcotics in plain view inside of the Cadillac and a search of the vehicle was conducted. Troopers located a substantial amount of narcotics inside of the vehicle, as well as packing material, cutting agents, and a scale; all of which were seized and submitted as evidence at Troop K. During the investigation, it was also determined that Whitehead was exhibiting signs of impairment.
