On Monday, May 19th, 2025, the Eastern District Major Crime Squad (EDMC) - Troop C in Tolland, was assigned to investigate a fraud scheme involving the owner of Pietras Funeral Home, INC., Philip Pietras (DOB 12/22/1973).
In October 2024, Troop K received a complaint reporting that while she was assessing her clients' financial accounts, she noticed a discrepancy in which a client had made a payment to Pietras Funeral Home, in Coventry, CT, however, the payment had never been transferred from the business account held by Pietras into the trust account held. After discovering this discrepancy, an audit of additional clients was initiated for those who utilize the funeral homes owned by Pietras.
Pietras was arrested on the strength of an arrest warrant on 04/06/2025 and charged in violation of Larceny 1st Degree, Embezzlement (C.G.S. 53a-122).
Upon the press release of this arrest being broadcasted to local media and social media sources, the Eastern District Major Crimes Squad - Troop C in Tolland, received numerous complaints from additional victims. An investigation revealed sufficient probable cause that Pietras had also embezzled funeral service contract funds entrusted to him from thirty-one (31) victims, over the age of sixty (60), that held contracts at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home from 2011 through 2025. An arrest warrant for the listed charges was approved by Rockville Superior Court.
On Tuesday, November 25th, 2025, at approximately 7:15 AM, Pietras turned himself into Troop C on the active arrest warrant. Pietras was placed under arrest and charged with the following:
C.G.S. 42-206a - Unfair Trade Practices (31 Counts)
C.G.S. 53a-122(a) - Larceny in the First Degree (3 Counts)
C.G.S. 53a-123(a)(4) - Larceny in the Second Degree (14 Counts)
Pietras was held on a $100,000 bond and was subsequently transported to Rockville Superior Court for a same day arraignment of 11/25/2025.
