Detectives Make Arrest in 2020 North Stonington Death Investigation
On February 22, 2020, an untimely death investigation was conducted by the Connecticut State Police Eastern District Major Crime Squad at the Stonington Institute, located on Swantown Hill Road, in the town of North Stonington. The victim, identified as Tyrell Hightower, DOB: 12/22/1990, was determined to have died of a drug overdose. The investigation that followed indicated that while both individuals were at the Stonington Institute, a male identified as Edward. R. Broyles, DOB: 10/11/1990, had allegedly provided the narcotics that caused the victim to overdose. Based upon information obtained during witness interviews and from video surveillance footage and other evidence collected, detectives applied for an arrest warrant for Broyles, which was granted through the New London Superior Part A Courthouse.
On March 9, 2023, Broyles was located in the city of Stuart, Florida, and taken into custody by Police Officers from the Stuart Police Department on the strength of the active extraditable arrest warrant. Broyles was held at the Martin County Sheriff's Detention Center until representatives of the Connecticut State Police could extradite him back to Connecticut.
On March 30, 2023 members of the Connecticut State Police Eastern District Major Crime Squad arrived at the Martin County Sheriff's Detention Center and extradited Broyles back to Connecticut without incident. Broyles was processed and charged in violation of:
Connecticut General Statute 53a-56(a)(1) Manslaughter in the 2nd Degree and Connecticut General Statute 21a-278(b)(1)(a) Sale/Delivery of Narcotics.
Broyles was held on a $200,000 cash/surety bond, and was scheduled for arraignment on March 31, 2023, at the New London Superior Court.
