On Monday, 10/21/24 at approximately 2:08 AM, a Trooper assigned to Troop G- Bridgeport was patrolling I-95 northbound in the area of exit 4 in Greenwich when they observed a Nissan Murano SUV traveling at a rate of speed exceeding 85 mph while simultaneously swerving across all three lanes of travel. Based upon these observations, the Trooper activated their emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop.
The operator of the Murano complied with the Trooper's signal to stop and pulled over. Once safely stopped, the Trooper approached the vehicle and the operator was positively identified as Maria Zavaleta (DOB 07/30/94), of Bridgeport, by her CT Adult Learner's Permit. The Trooper observed the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle cabin as well as that Zavaleta's eyes were watery. Zavaleta was also observed to be the sole occupant of the vehicle. Zavaleta admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages, and was requested to submit to Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. Zavaleta participated in SFST's, which were not performed to standard. Zavaleta was subsequently arrested and transported to Troop G, where she was processed on the following charges:
CGS 14-227a; Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs
CGS 14-222; Reckless Driving
CGS 14-36(a); Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a License
Chemical breath testing conducted at Troop G during processing determined that Zavaleta's blood alcohol content was approximately twice the legal limit. Zavaleta was later released from custody on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Stamford Superior Court on 11/18/24. Please see the attached criminal information summary.
