Arrest Made in Wethersfield Double Fatal Investigation

On 09/19/2021, at approximately 4:06 AM, Troop H Troopers were dispatched to I-91 Northbound in Wethersfield, prior to Exit 27, to investigate a report of a motor vehicle collision involving pedestrians. Responding troopers determined that four pedestrians had been involved in the collision and that the involved vehicle had evaded the scene. Two of the injured pedestrians, identified as Alexis Murphy, DOB 03/07/1994, and Destiny Lopez, DOB 10/06/1998, were transported to Hartford Hospital via ambulance for treatment. Two additional pedestrians, identified as Alberto Gonzalez Jr., DOB 05/27/1974, and Kariel Torres, DOB 03/08/1996, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene.

During the initial on-scene investigation, Troopers collected fragments belonging to the evading vehicle which were seized as evidence. Members of the CSP Central District Major Crime Squad and the CSP C.A.R.S. Unit responded to assist with the investigation. Using the fragments, investigators determined that the involved vehicle was a 2002-2004 blue Honda CR-V, which had sustained damage to the driver’s side front. Video surveillance footage from a nearby business was reviewed and showed a dark blue Honda CR-V traveling on Brainard Road, in Hartford, without the front driver’s side headlight illuminated, shortly after the time the collision was reported.

On 09/20/2021, Troop H was contacted by Hartford Police, which had received a call from a concerned citizen indicating that a blue Honda CR-V was parked in a location behind a Hartford residence. The caller explained that they had learned of the evading vehicle’s description from a news broadcast. Investigators responded and located a blue 2002 Honda CR-V, partially covered with a tarp, with visible driver’s side front end damage. Further investigation revealed that the Honda CR-V was actively registered to an owner/address in Windsor.

Troopers made contact with the registered owner of the Honda CR-V, who indicated that Shawn Wright, DOB 09/22/1988, had been in possession of the Honda CR-V on the date of the collision. Both the registered owner and Wright voluntarily agreed to meet with investigators.

During an initial interview, Shawn Wright indicated that he had been operating the Honda CR-V on the evening of 09/19/2021, which had experienced a mechanical issue, causing him to leave the vehicle parked at an address in Hartford. Wright further explained that he had borrowed a second vehicle and traveled to New York, where he had stayed overnight.

On 09/21/2021, the registered owner of the Honda CR-V and their legal representative met with investigators and explained that on the morning of 09/19/2021, Wright had communicated to the registered owner that he had been involved in an accident while operating the Honda CR-V.

During a subsequent meeting with Wright and his legal representative, Wright indicated that during the early morning hours of 09/19/2021, he had been operating the Honda CR-V on I-91 Northbound, in the area of Exit 27.

Based upon the above information, as well as other information obtained during the course of this investigation, Troopers applied for and were granted a warrant for the arrest of Shawn Wright.

On 11/09/2022, at approximately 12:15 PM, Shawn Wright, DOB 09/22/1988, of 46 Hale Drive, in Windsor, turned himself in at Troop H after learning of an active warrant for his arrest. Wright was taken into custody, processed and charged with the following:

C.G.S. 14-224(a)* - Evading Responsibility - Resulting in Death

C.G.S. 53a-167a Interfering with an Officer

Wright was transferred to Hartford Correctional Center where he was held on a $30,000.00 bond and was scheduled for arraignment at New Britain Superior Court, on 11/10/2022.
